MISSION STATEMENT
WHO WE ARE
semicolon explores the facets and intricacies of mental health and illness through the various ways it manifests in our lives. We aim to showcase fiction, nonfiction, and poetry by neurodivergent writers & people with mental illnesses. We hope that our journal becomes a safe place for those who struggle and overcome.

The semicolon staff is a group of graduate students, young professionals, writers, and publishers who are in one way or another passionate about mental health advocacy. Formed in August 2018,

ROSIE CARTER (SHE/HER)

Rosie Carter is a writer and artist based in Boston, MA. Her work can be found in Barren Magazine, Nightingale & Sparrow, and the Journal of the Core Curriculum at Boston University. She has been an active participant in the literary magazine community for over 10 years. In her free time, she enjoys playing with her cat, Orzo, and lounging with her cat, Butterscotch.
CALEB HOROWITZ (HE/HIM)

Caleb Horowitz is a professional copy editor and an amateur penguin enthusiast. He has an MA in English and a BFA in creative writing. Caleb has contributed research to Dr. Mark Boren's Student Resistance: a History of the Unruly Subject. Caleb likes to write about absurdism, Jewishness, and OCD. He has struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder for most of his life and hopes to spread awareness about the realities of living with OCD. He mostly tweets about Nintendo games and Avatar: the Last Airbender.
NIKKI KROUSHL (SHE/HER)

Nikki is graduate of UNCW's BFA in creative writing and certificate in publishing, currently working in higher education and completing graduate work in instructional technology. Much like a houseplant, she loves sunlight, the indoors, astrology poems, and when the cat sits next to her on the window sill. Her work has appeared in Pussy Magic, Luna Station Quarterly, Diabolical Plots, mutiny!, and other places.
KATHERINE O'HARA (SHE/HER)

Katherine O’Hara is a Summer 2020 Tin House Workshop alumna and an MFA candidate at UNCW where she works in marketing, design, and research for the Department of Creative Writing and the Watson College of Education. She has worked formerly for Beloit Poetry Journal, Ecotone, and Lookout Books. Among others, Katherine’s writing has appeared in the Hobart, Edizioni Black Coffee, Occulum Journal, and forthcoming in Press Pause Press and NELLE. As far as writing, she is pitching her hybrid novel that features poetic interpretations of grief in rural Louisiana, where her family is from. The excerpt 'More Filling than Berries' from the novel was later chosen by Edizioni Black Coffee as their monthly Hobart selection, whereupon it was published in translation and discussed on their podcast.

Carey Cecelia Shook is an SEO strategist by day and a freelance editor by night. In another life, she would've been a therapist (and maybe later on in this life?). She enjoys drinking iced coffees, TikTok (rip Vine), sushi, and long car rides while listening to true crime podcasts. When she writes, she writes about her struggles with mental health and family relationships. You can find her previous work in X-R-A-Y, among others.

Becka is a sky gazer, a writer of technical documentation and of poems, a maker of clothes, and a collector of keys and other things found on the ground. Writing as Rebecca Otter, her work appears in Memoir Mixtapes, Homology Lit, and X-R-A-Y.
